Batafon Arts
Batafon Arts is a non profit making organisation that has been running since 2000. Our mission is to bring the excitement and dynamic energy of traditional West African music and dance to the UK.

We offer workshops in schools, community groups and businesses. Every rhythm has a dance and a story behind it which, when taught in the Batafon Arts way, gives an insight into the culture and daily life of West Africa. Anyone can take part, irrespective of their language, culture, fitness level or age. Drumming releases natural endorphins and the creative process of drumming enables people to relax mentally and physically. It works very well as a team building exercise.

Weekly drumming workshops take place in Brighton, as well as dance workshops when we can. This group performs each year at the Brighton Fringe as Kakande Drummers.

On top of this we perform at weddings and corporate events as well as being available for gigs and festivals.

Ali Bangoura is the driving force behind Batafon Arts and leads the majority of the workshops. Born into a family of professional artistes in Guinea, Ali has been dancing from the age of 7. He has had formal training in traditional music, dance and choreography as well as traveling extensively in West Africa to research traditional ways of life, stories, myths and legends.
